History of Columbia

This family run business started in 1938 when the Lamfrom family fled Nazi Germany and arrived in Portland, Oregon. They designed and sold hats under the name Columbia Hat Company, named after the river that flowed along the city. The Lamfrom’s daughter Gert designed a fishing vest in 1960 and the company was renamed Columbia Sportswear Company. The Gore-Tex parka was introduced in 1975 and the company developed water repellent/breathable outerwear. The company has worldwide distributors and supplies retailers around the world.
